Photograph of members of 506PIR marching on the field at Kaprun (Currahee scrapbook)
Then and now.... 70 years.
The first piece was figuring out what church was in the background. There are three white churches in the area that are fairly visible today. There is a small one near the castle (Kaprun Burg), but the castle would be visible and the body of the church trails off in the opposite direction when viewed from the fields. The second one was more than a mile distant to the north, but it too trailed in the wrong direction when viewed from the low fields. I considered briefly the photo may have been reversed. However, it was resolved when I realized the church on the high ground in Kaprun is the only one that does not have a straight edge on the bottom of the steeple/spire roof.
Webster wrote how they would practice drills and marching on a polo field about a mile west of town (Kaprun) The location is more north than west but since the sun sets so much further north on the horizon at this time of year it is easy to understand why he would just say West. I looked at the map and found a soccer (foot ball) field in roughly the same area and thought, if I had to convert the use of a field where it would be flattest, what would I do with it...make it a sports field, of course. So I took a walk out there...
